What to do in Chichen Itzá


The legendary Mayan city of Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and Wonder of the World since 2007, stood out as a cultural and political center of the ancient Mayan civilization and was one of the largest settlements in the center-north of the Yucatan peninsula. With an extension of 25 kilometers and surrounded by green fields, Chichén Itza was an essential part of the life of the Mayan people. The religious, cultural and administrative center covered about 6 square kilometers; approximately, between 50,000 and 100,000 people lived in palapas with palm roofs.




 

The Sacred Cenote


It was the heart of religious activities, not only in the city of Chichen Itza but in the entire Mayan area. It was a source of worship for the god of rain, Chaac, this is almost circular, with an average of 60 meters in diameter. The surface of the water is 22 meters from the upper shore and is just over 13 meters deep in the central part.


 

The Castle of Kukulkán


It is a Mayan pyramid located in Chichén Itzá, Yucatan, Mexico. It was built by the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization during its apogee in the Mayan Classic Period (750-1100). It is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of Mesoamerican architecture. The name "Castle of Kukulkan" means "Castle of the feathered serpent".

Solar equinox

In them, a solar projection formed by seven triangles of light, inverted, is observed on the north staircase of the Pyramid of Kukulkán, as a result of the shadow projected by the nine platforms of the building, at dusk, which creates the appearance of a snake that gradually descends down one of the stairs. The spring equinox marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter. That's why spring festivals or "spring festivals" are celebrated in many parts of Mexico.
